Amsterdam

The largest city and capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is renowned for its expansive canals, prominent museums and historical sites but is also considered to be one of the most romantic cities in Europe.

While still featuring the advantages of every large city including culture, nightlife, international restaurants and a highly effective transport system, unlike most other cities, it is relatively quiet thanks to its extensive canals and little road traffic.

Air Malta flies to the central Schiphol airport, which is served by train, bus lines and hotel courtesy buses making it easy to travel to and from the airport. The best way to get into the city centre is by train which takes 15 to 20 minutes from the airport’s railway station.

Want a true authentic local experience? Rent a houseboat and enjoy the canals and bridges. The Anne Frank house is not to be missed even if the queue line is long; it is still worth the wait. The Rijksmuseum museum is home to over 400 masterpieces such as Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Vermeer and Van Gogh. There is also the world’s only floating floral market based in one of Amsterdam’s canal.

Music fans will not be disappointed by Amsterdam. With a mixture of music genres admired across the city, there are always big name acts on tour in the city or even a traditional jazz evening. Going to the theatre is also a popular activity in Amsterdam whilst kleinkunst (cabaret entailing storytelling, theatre, comedy and music) is widely available for comedy lovers.

Unlike most major European cities, Amsterdam is not defined by majestic palaces but rather by its domestic architecture. The joy lies in its intricate gables and gable stones depicting the trade of the previous owner and houseboats along the 160 man-made canals.

Enjoy the experience fully. Get on your bike to explore Amsterdam!
