I have chosen to buy my first home in Marsaxlokk – while it is well known for being a charming fishing village, known for its picturesque harbour, colourful traditional luzzu boats, and bustling fish market, there are more places that my camera and I would like to share with you.
The first is a watering hole of a different kind - St Peter’s Pool – a hole in the rock which you will recognise from promotional materials. It's an impossibly beautiful spot for swimming, snorkelling, and cliff diving. The crystal-clear waters and rocky surroundings make it a unique and refreshing place to visit via tourist buses which get relatively close by – you do need to walk a bit but the swim is the reward!
If you do like to walk, take a hike along the Delimara Peninsula, which offers stunning coastal views and serene landscapes. It's a less touristy area and perfect for nature enthusiasts and those seeking tranquility. You’ll get the chance to discover Delimara Fort which occasionally opens to the public to show off its impressive canons and the striking Lighthouse too; I think it could be an Edward Hopper painting!
You’ll probably arrive at the waterfront promenade which is lined with cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It's a great place to soak in the local atmosphere, enjoy fresh seafood, and watch the fishermen going about their daily routines. The colourful fishing boats are part of the fabric of Marsaxlokk and you can go on a fishing boat tour to experience the life of a Maltese fisherman. Some tours offer the opportunity to help with the catch or learn about traditional fishing techniques too.
Located near the waterfront is the small but charming St Paul's Chapel, which is dedicated to the Apostle who is said to have landed in Malta after a shipwreck. It offers a peaceful place for reflection and is adorned with traditional religious artwork. This quaint chapel holds historical importance as it dates back to the medieval period. Another place of worship, the Church of Our Lady of Pompeii, is a beautiful church in the village core, featuring unique architecture and religious art. It's worth a visit to appreciate the local religious and cultural heritage – even if you are not religious, the intricate work and the devotion really is quite incredible.
Although not directly in Marsaxlokk but nearby on the way to Birżebbugia, the Għar Dalam Cave and Museum are worth a visit. The cave is a prehistoric site with a rich history, and the museum displays a collection of fossils and artifacts that provide insight into Malta's ancient past.

SUNDAY MARKET
Marsaxlokk's bustling Sunday market is a vibrant and lively affair, where local vendors showcase their wares, including fresh seafood, artisanal crafts, and unique souvenirs. It's a fantastic opportunity to experience the authentic Maltese market atmosphere.
FORT DELIMARA
Overlooking the beautiful Marsaxlokk Bay, Fort Delimara dates back to the 19th century. With its strategic location and impressive architecture, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
KALANKA
The instagrammable bay really deserves the trip and walk down the stairs that lead to it – alternatively, charter a boat and head in to swim in the crystal clear waters. Fill your feed and be the envy of your friends!
COLOURFUL DOORS
These houses were originally fisherman’s cottages and today are short-let properties. Perfectly located close to restaurants and the seafront, they are decorated to be similar to Pinto’s Wharf in Valletta.
FISHERMAN'S MONUMENT
Located by the water’s edge, the Monument pays tribute to the fishermen of Malta. The bronze statue shows a father returning from fishing with the haul being met by his son, daughter and cat.
DELIMARA LIGHTHOUSE
Standing tall on the rugged coastline, the Delimara Lighthouse is an iconic landmark that is now available to book for a short stay. Enjoy a scenic stroll to the lighthouse and admire the stunning vistas of the sea and cliffs.
